A thank you email after interview is a short note, usually sent the same day or the next working day, that thanks the interviewer, repeats one reason you fit the role and confirms your interest. It is not a second interview. Keep it under about 120 words, make it specific to what was discussed, and send it to the people who actually spoke with you. It is a courtesy that many hiring managers notice, but it does not guarantee any result.
What to include in a thank you email after interview
A good note has four small parts.
- A clear subject line that names the role and the interview.
- One sentence of thanks for their time.
- One specific detail from the conversation, such as a project, a challenge or a team goal.
- One line connecting your experience to that detail, and a polite close.
A simple template you can adapt
Subject: Thank you, Business Analyst interview on Tuesday
Dear Ms. Rao,
Thank you for speaking with me on Tuesday about the Business Analyst role. I enjoyed hearing how your team is moving reporting to a single dashboard. In my current role I built a weekly sales report that cut manual effort for our regional managers, and I would be glad to bring that approach to your team.
Please let me know if you need anything further from me. I look forward to the next steps.
Warm regards, Your Name, phone number

Timing for a thank you email after interview
Send the email within one working day while the conversation is fresh. If a panel met you, write to each person separately or send one message to everyone, depending on how contacts were shared. If you only have the recruiter's address, ask them to pass your thanks on. If a decision date was mentioned, wait until that date has passed before sending a follow-up question, and keep it polite.
- Do proofread the interviewer's name and designation.
- Do attach nothing unless they asked for a document.
- Do not repeat your entire resume in the message.
- Do not ask about salary in a thank-you note.
- Do not send identical text to every interviewer.
Common mistakes in a thank you email after interview
Generic lines such as "I am very passionate" add little. Replace them with proof, for instance a number, a tool or an outcome from your work. Avoid typing errors, long paragraphs and informal chat language. Do not mention a weak answer in a defensive way. If you forgot a key point, add it in one sentence and keep the tone calm, for example by sharing a relevant achievement you did not get to mention.
If you made notes right after the interview, use them. Writing down the interviewer's names, the topics raised and any concern they expressed makes the email far easier and more personal.
Next step
Before your next interview, build a primary resume on CVTara and create a job-specific version so the achievements you mention in your thank-you note match what the employer has already read.

Frequently asked questions
How soon should I send a thank-you email after an interview?
Within one working day is a sensible rule while the conversation is still fresh. Keep it short and specific.
Should I send a thank-you email to every interviewer?
If you have their contact details, a short personalised note to each is best. If you only have the recruiter's address, ask them to pass on your thanks.
Can I mention salary in a thank-you email?
It is better not to. Keep the note about appreciation, fit and next steps, and handle pay in the proper discussion.
