How to Answer Tell Me About Yourself

When an interviewer says "tell me about yourself", they want a focused one-minute summary of who you are professionally and why you fit this role, not your life story. A reliable way to answer is the present, past, future structure: what you do now, what experience brought you here, and what you want next in this role. Support each part with one piece of evidence, and keep the whole answer to roughly 60 to 90 seconds.

The present, past, future structure

Break your answer into three short parts.

  • Present: your current role or recent study, and one key strength.
  • Past: two relevant steps in your journey, ideally with a result you can state truthfully.
  • Future: why this role and this company make sense as the next step.

You do not need to follow strict timing, but each part should take about twenty seconds. Practise aloud so it sounds natural rather than memorised.

Sample answer for an experienced candidate

"I am currently a customer support team lead at a telecom company, managing a team of eight. Over the last four years I moved from handling calls to improving our escalation process, which helped us close complaints faster. Earlier I worked in a retail support role, where I learned to listen carefully under pressure. I am now looking for a larger service operations role like this one, where I can use my process improvement experience." The details here are illustrative; use your own facts.

Tell me about yourself: sample answer for a fresher

"I have just completed my B.Com and a certification in Tally and GST basics. During my final-year project I prepared an accounts register for a local shop, which taught me accuracy and deadlines. I also did a short internship where I helped reconcile monthly bills. I am looking for an accounts trainee role where I can build skills in a structured team." Again, replace the example with your own true experience.

Tailoring your tell me about yourself answer

Read the job description before the interview and pick two or three themes it repeats. Mention those skills in your answer. A candidate for a sales role should talk about targets and client handling, while a candidate for a coding role might highlight projects and tools.

  • Do start with your current situation, not your childhood.
  • Do include one result or example that shows your skill.
  • Do not recite your resume line by line.
  • Do not criticise a former employer.

Common mistakes when you tell me about yourself

Rambling is the biggest problem. Another is being too modest, such as saying "I am just a fresher", which weakens your message. Equally, avoid exaggerating, because follow-up questions will test every claim. If you are changing careers, explain the link between your earlier work and the new field in one sentence. If you have a gap, mention it briefly and honestly only if it fits, then move on to what you did during it.

Write your answer once, record it on your phone, listen, and cut anything that does not help the interviewer see you in the role.

Next step

Your resume summary and this answer should tell the same story, so build a primary resume on CVTara first and use it as the base for your spoken introduction.
