Overtime Pay Calculator

An overtime pay calculator turns extra hours into an estimated amount by multiplying your hourly wage, the overtime hours and a rate multiplier. The Overtime Pay Calculator on CVTara lets you edit each of these, because overtime rules differ by state, industry, contract and company policy.

What an overtime pay calculator does

You enter your pay, convert it to an hourly rate, add the overtime hours and choose a multiplier such as one and a half times or double. It returns the estimated overtime amount and the total for the month. Whether you are entitled to overtime at all depends on your role, wage category and applicable law, so verify with your employer or the labour department.

Inputs

  • Monthly wage or the base you want to use, plus working days per month.
  • Normal hours per day.
  • Overtime hours worked in the period.
  • Multiplier, which you can set to match your appointment letter or policy.
  • Optional: separate multiplier for weekly offs or holidays.

The formula in words

Hourly wage equals monthly wage divided by working days, divided by normal hours per day. Overtime pay equals hourly wage multiplied by overtime hours and by the multiplier. Add that figure to your regular pay for the month's total.

Worked example (illustrative)

Suppose a monthly wage of 26,000 rupees, 26 working days and 8 normal hours a day. Daily wage is 1,000 and hourly wage is 125. You work 10 overtime hours at a multiplier of 2. The overtime pay is 125 multiplied by 10 multiplied by 2, which equals 2,500 rupees. With a multiplier of 1.5 the amount would be 1,875. These figures are illustrative.

Mistakes to avoid with an overtime pay calculator

  • Using the CTC figure when the policy bases overtime on a specific wage component.
  • Counting break time or commuting as overtime hours.
  • Assuming every employee is eligible. Many salaried, managerial roles are not.
  • Using a different divisor from the one your company uses for hourly rates.
  • Forgetting to keep a record of hours, approvals and messages.

Keeping records

Keep a simple log with date, start time, end time and the approving manager. If a payslip looks different from your estimate, show the log to HR and ask which wage component and divisor were used.

If you are comparing jobs where overtime is common, note this in your job tracker, since fixed hours and overtime culture affect real earnings.

Run the overtime pay calculator for a typical month and a heavy month. The gap between them shows how much of your income depends on extra hours, which matters when you compare job offers.

Next step

Use the CVTara application tracker to record roles, pay structure and hours expectations as you compare offers.
