Hourly to Salary Finder

An hourly to salary finder converts an hourly rate into monthly and yearly income, so you can compare freelance, part-time or contract work with a fixed salary. It is handy when a client quotes a rate per hour and you want to know what that means for your finances.

What the finder calculates

The basic conversion multiplies the hourly rate by the hours you work each week and the weeks you work each year. The finder also lets you reduce the figure for unpaid holidays, sick days and gaps, because an hourly rate pays only for hours actually billed.

Inputs to enter

  • Hourly rate and currency, with an exchange rate if the client pays in foreign currency.
  • Hours per week that you can realistically bill, not the hours you are available.
  • Weeks of work per year after leave, holidays and idle periods.
  • Your own costs, such as equipment, internet and platform or bank charges.
  • A salary figure you want to compare with.

Method in words

Multiply the hourly rate by weekly billable hours to get weekly income. Multiply by the number of paid weeks to get annual income. Divide by twelve for a monthly figure. Subtract your costs to see a net amount, and compare it with the fixed salary after adding the value of paid leave and employer contributions that a salary typically includes.

Hourly to salary finder: worked example

This example is illustrative. Suppose the rate is Rs 1,000 an hour, you bill 30 hours a week, and you work 44 paid weeks a year.

  • Weekly income: 1,000 x 30 = Rs 30,000.
  • Annual income: 30,000 x 44 = Rs 13,20,000.
  • Monthly average: about Rs 1,10,000.

If you spend Rs 1,20,000 a year on costs and set aside money for your own insurance and retirement, the comparable salary is lower than the headline figure. A salaried role at Rs 11,00,000 with paid leave and PF could then be close in value.

Realistic billable hours

Many people overestimate billable time. Proposals, invoicing, learning and finding clients all take hours that nobody pays for. If you are new to freelancing, test the calculation with fewer billable hours than you hope for.

Common mistakes

  • Don't multiply by 52 weeks; you will take breaks and have gaps.
  • Don't ignore currency movements and bank charges on foreign payments.
  • Don't forget tax: freelance income has its own rules, so verify with a qualified professional.
  • Do count unpaid holidays and sick days honestly.
  • Do compare on a net basis, not only a gross one.

Using the result

Use the output to set a minimum rate you are willing to accept, and to check whether a fixed-salary offer is better for your situation. Also think about stability, learning and growth, which an hourly figure cannot show.

Frequently asked questions

How does an hourly to salary finder work?

It multiplies your hourly rate by billable hours and paid weeks, then divides by twelve for a monthly figure.

How many billable hours should I assume?

Use hours you can realistically invoice, which are usually fewer than your total working hours, and test a lower case too.

Is hourly income comparable to a salary directly?

Not directly, because salary includes paid leave and employer contributions, so adjust for gaps and your own costs first.
