Salary Breakup Calculator

A salary breakup calculator splits your annual package into its parts, such as basic pay, HRA, special allowance, employer contributions, variable pay and deductions. Seeing each component clearly helps you understand what you will really receive and what you can discuss with the employer.

The usual components

  • Basic pay: the core of your salary. PF, gratuity and sometimes HRA depend on it.
  • HRA: house rent allowance, linked to rent you pay and your city.
  • Special or other allowance: the balancing portion that makes up fixed pay.
  • Employer PF and gratuity: shown in CTC but not credited to you monthly.
  • Variable pay or bonus: paid based on performance or company results.
  • Deductions: employee PF, professional tax, income tax and other recoveries.

Inputs to enter

Enter your annual CTC, the basic pay percentage, the HRA share, variable pay and any benefits listed in your offer. If you do not know the basic percentage, ask HR, because this single number changes PF, gratuity and the tax treatment of HRA.

Method in words

Start with CTC. Allocate basic as a share of CTC, then HRA as a share of basic. Calculate employer PF from the basic amount as per your employer's practice. Subtract employer contributions and variable pay to find fixed gross. The special allowance is whatever remains after basic and HRA. Subtract employee deductions from monthly gross to see the estimated credit.

Salary breakup calculator: worked example

This example is illustrative. Suppose CTC is Rs 10,00,000 and basic is 40 percent, which is Rs 4,00,000 a year.

  • HRA at 40 percent of basic: Rs 1,60,000.
  • Employer PF on basic at 12 percent: Rs 48,000.
  • Variable pay: Rs 1,00,000.
  • Special allowance: 10,00,000 minus 4,00,000, 1,60,000, 48,000 and 1,00,000 = Rs 2,92,000.

Fixed gross is therefore Rs 8,52,000 a year. With a higher basic, PF and gratuity rise while the special allowance falls, so take-home may drop even though CTC is unchanged.

What to check in your own structure

  • Whether basic is a reasonable share of fixed pay, since it affects several benefits.
  • How much of CTC is variable, and the rules for its payout.
  • Whether HRA exemption applies to you under your chosen tax regime.
  • Whether benefits such as insurance are included in CTC.

Common mistakes

  • Don't assume a higher basic is always better; it raises benefits but can lower monthly cash.
  • Don't treat variable pay as guaranteed.
  • Do ask for the breakup in writing before you resign from your current job.
  • Do confirm PF and tax treatment with your employer or a qualified professional.

Next step

Once the structure makes sense, build a primary resume in CVTara and tailor it to the job description of each role you want to apply for.

Frequently asked questions

What does a salary breakup calculator show?

It splits your CTC into basic, HRA, allowances, employer contributions, variable pay and deductions to estimate monthly pay.

Why does basic pay matter so much?

PF, gratuity and sometimes HRA are linked to basic, so changing its share changes both benefits and monthly cash.

Can I ask HR to change my salary structure?

Many employers have fixed templates, but it is reasonable to ask politely whether any flexibility exists.
