A paycheck tax deduction calculator estimates how much is deducted from your monthly salary for income tax, provident fund and other payroll items. It helps you understand your payslip and check that the deductions look sensible.
What gets deducted
- Income tax deducted at source, often called TDS on salary.
- Employee PF contribution, linked to your basic pay.
- Professional tax, which depends on your state and slab.
- Other recoveries such as insurance premiums, loan instalments or canteen charges.
The calculator lists each item separately so you can see what is within your control and what is not.
Inputs to enter
Enter your monthly gross salary, basic pay, the tax regime you follow, and any declared investments or deductions if your regime allows them. Add your professional tax and any other regular recoveries. If you have variable pay or a bonus, enter it separately, since it affects tax in the month it is paid.
Method in words
Estimate your total taxable income for the year, calculate yearly tax using the applicable slabs and add cess. Divide the yearly tax by the number of months remaining to get monthly TDS. Add employee PF, professional tax and other recoveries. Subtract the total from monthly gross to estimate net pay.
Paycheck tax deduction calculator: worked example
This example is illustrative and does not use actual slabs. Suppose monthly gross is Rs 1,00,000, basic is Rs 40,000, and estimated yearly tax is Rs 96,000.
- Monthly TDS: 96,000 divided by 12 = Rs 8,000.
- Employee PF at 12 percent of basic: Rs 4,800.
- Professional tax: Rs 200.
- Total deductions: Rs 13,000, leaving net pay of about Rs 87,000.
If a bonus is paid in March, the employer may recompute tax and deduct more that month, so net pay can look lower than other months.
Why your payslip may differ from the estimate
- Your employer may use different assumptions about investments you will make.
- Late submission of proofs can raise tax in the final months.
- A job change mid-year brings income from the previous employer into the picture.
- PF may be calculated on a capped amount in some companies.
Common mistakes
- Don't assume the same TDS applies every month of the year.
- Don't forget to submit your declarations on time if your regime uses them.
- Don't treat the estimate as a final tax liability; you may still file a return and settle any balance.
- Do compare the estimate with your payslip and ask payroll about differences.
- Do verify current tax rules with the Income Tax Department or a qualified professional.
Using the result
If your deductions look much higher than expected, review your declarations and regime choice with your payroll team. If they look lower, set aside a small amount in case of a balance payable at filing time.
