Contractor vs Full-Time Salary Calculator

Comparing contractor vs full-time salary is not as simple as putting two monthly figures side by side. A contract rate usually looks higher, but a full-time offer carries paid leave, provident fund, insurance and stability that the contract may not. This calculator helps you convert both offers to the same basis so you can compare them fairly.

What the calculator does

It takes the contract income you expect over a year, subtracts the unpaid time and costs you carry yourself, and compares the result with the full-time package after adding the value of benefits. The output is an effective yearly figure for each option, plus the contract rate that would match the full-time package.

Inputs to enter

  • Contract rate: monthly fee or hourly rate, and the number of billable months you realistically expect in a year.
  • Gaps: weeks between contracts, public holidays that go unpaid, and sick days.
  • Your own costs: health insurance, retirement saving, laptop, software and any tax or accounting help.
  • Full-time package: fixed pay, variable pay you are likely to receive, employer PF, gratuity, insurance and paid leave days.
  • Notice period or termination terms for both options.

The formula in words

First, work out contract income for the year by multiplying the monthly rate by the months you will actually be paid. Subtract your own costs to get the contract net value. Then, for the full-time role, add fixed pay, expected variable pay and the money value of employer contributions and benefits. Divide each total by twelve to see a monthly effective figure, and compare.

Worked example (illustrative)

Suppose a contract pays Rs 1,00,000 a month and you expect ten paid months because of gaps and holidays, giving Rs 10,00,000. You spend Rs 60,000 on insurance and equipment, leaving Rs 9,40,000. A full-time offer pays Rs 9,00,000 fixed, with an employer PF contribution and insurance together worth Rs 1,00,000, giving Rs 10,00,000. In this illustration the full-time role comes out ahead, even though the contract rate looked about 30 percent higher at first glance. Change the gap months to twelve and the answer flips, which is why honest inputs matter.

Common mistakes

  • Don't assume the contract runs for twelve straight months unless it is written down.
  • Don't forget that paid leave is money: twenty days a year is close to a full month of pay.
  • Don't leave out your own insurance and retirement saving when you are the one paying for them.
  • Do ask who handles tax deduction and invoicing, since this affects your cash flow.
  • Do check renewal terms and notice period before you resign from a stable job.

Beyond the numbers

A contract can add specialised experience quickly, while a full-time role may offer training, promotion paths and a steadier income. Tax treatment and benefit rules differ between employment types, so verify the details with the employer or a qualified professional before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a contractor vs full-time salary comparison need adjustments?

Contract rates rarely include paid leave, PF or insurance, so those must be added to the full-time side or subtracted from the contract side.

How many paid months should I assume for a contract?

Use only the months written in the agreement plus a cautious estimate for renewals, and leave out any gaps you expect.

Is a higher contract rate always better?

Not necessarily, because gaps, your own costs and lower stability can make the effective yearly value similar or lower.
